Pete, McGwire & Bronco hoops - what do they have in common?
By Troy OppieThey're all in this week's edition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly! The Good: Coach Petersen recognized as Paul 'Bear' Bryant national coach of the year for the second time in his career. Petersen is the only coach to win twice in the 24-year history of the award. also good: Six Idaho Steelheads headed for the ECHL all-star game. Four rookies; goalie Richard Bachman, defenseman Brendan Milnamow, and forwards Evan Barlow and John Swanson were voted in by opposing coaches, team captains and ECHL media. Idaho coach Derek Laxdal was tabbed to help coach the National Conference team, and Steelheads broadcaster Doug Plagens was named play-by-play guy for the game. The ECHL all-star game is January 20th from Ontario, California. It will be broadcast live by CableOne on channel 17 and Altitude Sports and Entertainment on DirecTV and Dish Network). You can also catch it on the radio on KTIK (1350 AM). Puck drops just after 8 PM. The Bad: This week's admission by Mark McGwire that he used steroids during his record-breaking home run season in 1998, as well as other times during his career. McGwire made the admission (which should not have surprised anyone) after being named St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach - and received a standing ovation when introduced to Cards faithful at the team's pre-season media day on Sunday. The Ugly: Boise State basketball is a combined 0-9 in conference play this season. The men are on a six-game losing streak - the team's worst under coach Greg Graham, and longest streak since losing seven consecutive in the early 2000's. The men's team is in serious jeopardy of missing out on the WAC tournament this March, which only takes the top eight teams in the nine-team WAC. The already-present rumblings to change coaches have grown louder with each loss. The women, meanwhile strutted to an 11-3 non-conference record before losing the first three straight conference games. Saturday, the team lost to 2-13 Idaho in Moscow, missing 13 free throws in a three point loss. Better luck next week, blue and orange! |
