As promised, low water levels close several Lucky Peak docks early

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Access to Lucky Peak Reservoir will be limited over Labor Day weekend because of low water levels.

The reservoir is still open to all boats, but several loading ramps have been closed, and all private and campground docks are inaccessible by water.

Barclay Bay, Robie Creek and Max Creek are all closed. One of two loading docks at Spring Shores Marina will be open through the weekend.

Park managers said they have been dropping the water levels about one foot each day since late July. Since last week, they've been draining two feet each day.

It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up quickly. Now, even before Labor Day, the lake looks like a virtual ghost town.

Store managers at Spring Shores Marina say they'll close up shop after this weekend.

"Usually we go to the end of September, but this will be our last weekend," store assistant manager Beverly Chaney said.

They're not as busy this year, but will carry out business as usual through the holiday.

"We're pretty busy this weekend in terms of rentals," Chaney said. "We have three pontoon boats booked for tomorrow and some pontoon boats and jet skis going out on Monday, so our equipment's going out."

Chaney said holidays usually paint a much different picture at the lake, with big crowds and dozens of campers lining the shores.

This year, she expects Labor Day to look like any other Monday.

"Typically up here it is really pleasant during the week and the real crowds come out on the weekends," Chaney said. "So weekends like this are kind of how it is normally during the week."

Her confession? That's just the way she likes it.

"There are fewer people on the lake so it's a nicer time to be on the lake in some ways," Chaney said.

Chaney said they have stopped renting out ski boats because of how low the water is, and that she's seen very few other ski boats out on the lake recently. However, the marina is still renting out jet skis and pontoon boats.
