Project Green Champion of the Week: "Om Your Home"

BOISE - Sure, you may own your home, but do you "Om" your home? It's a trend in ecologically friendly building and remodeling. The term was coined by a Boise woman who has built a company of the yoga mantra, Om.

"As soon as I walked in, it had so much potential," said Sharon Patterson. She is "Om-ing" a home she found and purchased in Boise and has taught several other home owners how to do it.

At 600 square feet, the home isn't exactly roomy.

"The closet was about three feet by one foot," she laughed. But the house has a strong foundation, a few surprises like beautiful hardwood floors, and this cream-colored home with green trim was perfect for Patterson's green dream.

"We're going to leave the existing structure intact as much as possible so we minimize any waste coming out of this," she explained.

After doing several remodels, Patterson says she felt worse and worse about all the waste left behind, so she started her own business called Om Your Home.

"Om is a yoga chant and it means the original sound of creation, it's also about having greater consciousness and so when I started thinking about a design career and remodeling homes I guess the basic premise is that I just wanted to be more conscious of the way I did it," Patterson said.

In this case, she definitely is. When this home is finished, it will have larger windows to help heat it and a house fan instead of air conditioning. Patterson also recycled all the wood they pulled out, and even used the dead trees in the yard for firewood. Patterson hopes it's catching on not just for her business, but for the Earth.

"Once people know the impacts and the effects of their decisions in a house I think they'll really think about what they're doing and change their ways," she said. Maybe even their entire lives. In the end, she hopes the 'Om' starts popping up all over.

"I'd like to take it from 'Om your Home' to 'Om your Office' to 'Om your restaurant'," said Patterson.
