Boise to promote 'green' project
Boise Mayor David Bieter speaks at annual State of the City address. By Stephanie Hale
BOISE- Boise Mayor, David Bieter, gave his State of the City address on Wednesday and laid out an outline for the city of Boise by promising to promote job growth and business development while becoming "green".
Bieter talked about fixing the economic slowdown by going green. He says Idaho ranks 4th in the nation when it comes to new business experimentation and innovation. In response to the hard economic times the state has seen, Bieter proposed creating a new business incubator to support alternative energy start ups. The “green house” located at 5th and Idaho, would provide discounted office space and support services for start up green businesses. “We have a soon to be vacant building,” Bieter said. Staying with the green theme, Bieter also announced a stimulus project that will retrofit 725 historic Boise streetlights with LED lights. This project is eligible for federal stimulus funding. Besides promoting his green vision for Boise, Bieter also paid tribute to the victims of the Oregon Trail fire. He recognized those families’ determination to rebuild quickly. Bieter also said without the incredible skill of emergency crews, the Amity Road inferno would have been a much worse catastrophe. “Here we are…only nine months from the fire…and most of the homes are fully rebuilt or at least partially so,” Bieter said. “These people have come together and checked on each other…and they’ve become an even stronger community because of it.” Mayor Bieter also bestowed three keys to the city to commemorate the success and lasting impact of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Idaho this past February. |
