GARDEN CITY- Bill Meeker grew up with his hands in the dirt an now that he's all grown up not much charged.
"We had to have a garden to feed 8 in our family," said Bill Meeker, the director of Garden-O'-Feedin'. Now retired, Bill recently acquired a new title the director of the Garden-O'-Feedin'. It's a part of the Vineyard Church in Garden City. Bill takes his hobby beyond his this fence line to help others. Most of what's grown here goes to less fortunate families. "We produced 25,780 pounds of vegetables and we handed it out to over 1,300 families," Meeker said. Along with the help of more than 100 volunteers, Bill farms all sorts of fruits and vegetables. When he's not pulling weeds Bill teaches others how to start their own garden. "Compost, compost, compost. The soil is what makes a good garden. If you've got good soil anyone can raise a garden," Meeker said. Janel Schatraw says she didn't have much luck with a vegging garden until she met Bill. In no time at all, Janel says her gardening skills blossomed. "It took a little bit of work at first, but it's not so much anymore. We've gotten some lettuce and spinach," said Janel Schatraw, a local gardener. Bill says he's happy to lend his green thumb, if you don't have one yourself. "All you have to do is put the seed in the ground and pour a little water on it and God will take care of the rest," Meeker said. For an expert consultation, farmer Bill only asks you pull a few weeds in return. He says most people just need help getting started. |
