NAMPA - Some call it pornography in the Nampa Library, others call it censorship and on Monday night the battle over two books came to a head.
After more than an hour of discussion, the Nampa Library board made a decision some say will change the library forever.
Randy Jackson, Nampa resident, has spent the past two years trying to get "The Joy of Sex" and "The Joy of Gay Sex" off the library's shelves.
"They are images you would find in an adult book store - not in a publicly funded, open to the public library," Jackson said during Monday's board meeting.
Two times he failed to have the board vote his way, but on Monday he and more than a dozen others with the same concerns finally got what they wanted. In a 3-to-2 vote, the Nampa Library Board agreed to remove both titles from the adult section of the library and place them in the director's office for now.
"I think it was a bold move the board made and I appreciate their decision," Catherine Tedeski said.
"To me, it's yet again, a way to take away information which should be public and talked about as a family," Leta Newstaedter said.
Rosie Reilly, chairwoman of the board, said the library staff followed its collection policy and worked hard to make sure the books stayed out of the reach of children - that's why she is disappointed with the board's decision.
"If you have to knock on the library door to ask permission to see a book than it's not a public library," Reilly said.
Now the board will have to determine if its decision will mark the final chapter in the battle over these two books.
The director of the library said the books will be moved immediately to abide by the boards decision. People can still check them out, but they have to get them from her office.
