BOISE - A Boise family says bird mites infested their home and their bodies.
All the itching and scratching has left them with no place to go. Apartment managers say they're done paying for a hotel for the family because they claim the place is clean. The family says it's not and they're not about to move back in.
Kori Scott and her boyfriend say they've been living a nightmare the past few days. They're displaced from their home, living out of a motel - all because of bird mites.
"I'll tell you if something happens to my baby over this and no one wants to help I'll be very angry," said Scott.
She says the problem started when birds began nesting in the apartment walls. She let the managers know and they had the nests removed, but apparently the mites live off of bird blood and once the nests were gone, they went looking for new hosts. Scott says by Tuesday the parasites were crawling all over her apartment.
"They actually had one exterminator in there that came in, then turned around and walked out and said I can't do anything for you," Scott said.
For two nights they stayed at Motel 6. They bought new clothes, new food, and medicine. They say they've spent at least $300 out of pocket. The boys even shaved their heads.
"They're everywhere they get into your nose. You breathe them into your lungs. They get around your mouth. You swallow them. These are parasites. They're not a bug, they're going to live inside of you," said Robert Palomarez.
Scott said apartment managers told her everything would be fixed by Thursday morning. When she arrived at her apartment around 1 p.m., she says the place looked like it was never cleaned. She found dirty carpets, dead mites and a couch that looked un-touched under the cushions. Air vents were laid on top of the kids clothes.
"It's exhausting, but I want to make sure that they're going to be OK and that they're not going to get hurt or anything by all of this," she said.
The property managers say the place was thoroughly cleaned and they believe it's in livable condition.
