Former substitute teacher charged with sex crimes

TWIN FALLS (AP) - A former Twin Falls School District substitute teacher and volunteer volleyball coach has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor.

William Arthur Stevens, 22, was charged with two counts of felony sex abuse of a child under 16, four counts of felony lewd conduct with a minor under 16, and misdemeanor distribution of obscene material.

Stevens is accused of abusing a 15-year-old boy in September at an RV park in Twin Falls.

Stevens volunteered as an eighth grade volleyball coach at Vera C. O'Leary Junior High School and after passing a background check taught as a substitute teacher for a day and a half in the district

Superintendent Wiley Dobbs said the district has not received any complaints about Stevens. He was removed from the list of volunteers and substitute teachers after his arrest.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 31.
