Signs reach out to former LDS in Treasure Valley
MERIDIAN - A billboard in Meridian is reaching out to Idahoans who have left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It shows smiling people with the message “You are not alone.” On the bottom is a website address, PostMormon.org.

Gina Parker was baptized into the LDS Church at the age of 18, and married a returned missionary in the temple. After embracing and living the LDS faith for several years, Gina said she just didn't feel it was true, so she decided to leave.

“One of the hardest things I've ever done,” Parker said. “I felt like one of my best friends died.”

Then Gina discovered the Post-Mormon community.

“It has helped me so much. I don't know what I would have done without it,” she said.

“It makes LDS people uncomfortable, and I guess they jump to the conclusion it's attacking Mormonism, and it's not,” said Post-Mormon founder Jeff Ricks of Logan, Utah. He pointed to the non-profit's mission statement, which reads, "The mission of PostMormon.org is to provide and maintain systems that facilitate the growth and development of a safe and supportive community for those who leave or are considering leaving the Mormon Church."

When asked why he uses billboards to reach out to former Mormons (something other religions aren't doing), Ricks said, “Because there is a need ... There is a need for people who have left the church to connect.”

A message left with an area spokesman for the LDS Church has not been returned.
