Authorities remove a red Ford Mustang from the Snake River Monday.
MURPHY - Authorities have recovered the vehicle swept away from a flash flood over the weekend.
Harvey Grimm, Owyhee County coroner, says the car, a red Ford Mustang, was pulled out of the Snake River Monday afternoon. But no body was found inside the vehicle.
Gary Aman, former Owyhee County Sheriff and family spokesperson, says they believe the victim is George Reed of Jordan Valley, Ore.
Reed's son lives in Murphy, Aman said. Reed was on his way back to Jordan Valley after dropping his son off when the incident occurred.
Reed worked for Owyhee County Sheriff's Office for 11 years and also worked in Malheur County prior to that. He retired this past January.
"It's a great loss to his family and a great loss to law enforcement," Aman said. "He was a great guy."
The search has been called off for the night and will resume Tuesday - including a search from the air.
Canyon County Sheriff Chris Smith says the car and victim were swept into the rushing river Saturday night.
Smith said Monday morning he believes the man is a friend of his who attended a weekend barbecue. He says the victim is retired from law enforcement.
Witnesses say the car was driving on Highway 78 when a wall of water pushed it off the road, down a creek and into the river.
Meteorologists say heavy storms dropped between one and two inches of rain in the county in an hour Saturday night.
