BOISE - Ryan Stockdale flew into northern California Saturday, arriving a few days before an experimental operation that could save his life.
The Middleton father of four was to fly by commercial jet Saturday morning, but family spokesman Scott Turlington says he made a last-minute audible, putting Stockdale on a charter jet instead.
Turlington says it seemed like the better choice, given Stockdale's susceptibility and suffering. Turlington says one of Stockdale's Boise-based doctors stopped giving him a potent painkiller earlier this week, afraid it would kill his patient.
Turlington also said Saturday's charter flight was paid for by his company, Principle Strategic Advisors, and not with money donated throughout the Treasure Valley.
Stockdale suffers from cluster headaches, what doctors describe as one of the most painful conditions known to man. After a year and hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical treatment, Stockdale's doctors say deep brain stimulation is his last hope. The procedure is common for Parkinson's patients, but considered experimental for the treatment of cluster headaches.
