SALT LAKE CITY - What I thought was going to be a nice easy day has turned into a complete circus.

At Friday morning's print media press conference, Hawaii coach Greg McMackin used a gay slur to describe a dance done by Notre Dame football players at a banquet before last season's Hawaii bowl. Listen to McMackin's comments

McMackin used the phrase "little faggot dance" and, according to media in the room at the time, then asked the room not to print what he had said.

After his press conference was over, McMackin returned to the room to offer another apology before sequestering himself in his hotel room to wait until it was time to leave for the airport.

Television and radio reporters were each in different rooms, but the story spread quickly throughout the conference.

Nearly every reporter was in disbelief as to what was said - it's a colossal screwup by McMackin that could very well land him in hot water with the University and put his career in jeopardy, not to mention the baseline insensitivity of the comment in the first place.

The print writers have been in a tizzy since this story began, watching which national media picked it up and comparing the national headlines. The event was a spectacle in and of itself, but watching the coverage is its own unique beast.

Outside of that excitement, I had a nice conversation with Idaho coach Robb Akey today. He's constantly fired up, and seems to have a lot to be excited about this coming season.

I'll share some of his thoughts today on Sports2Night at 5:30 and 10 p.m. on CBS 2.
