Idaho sends hot shot crew to California
BOISE -- As he watches the battle against the flames in California on television, Caldwell firefighter Jay Coulter remembers two years ago when he went there to help.

He vividly recalls the unpredictability of the winds.

"I guess what struck me was how the wind would push the fire," Coulter said. "You'd have a 30-foot area of burned ground then it would zig zag, catch another house, zig zag again."

Now Idaho is once again helping California. Twenty firefighters with a Twin Falls hot shot crew deployed to California over the weekend.

"They're on the fire line," said Aitor Bidaburu with the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. "They're constructing a break to stop the spread of the fire. They're doing critical work."

Firefighting is always tough, says Coulter, but the California wildfires were especially hard work.

"Anytime, you're out in the middle of nowhere, with limited water, limited resources, limited tools, it's a challenging situation," he said.

And Coulter wouldn't be surprised if he and other local firefighters were called to fight Golden State flames again.
