Canyon County residents will see jail bond on ballot
CALDWELL - Candidates for mayor and city-council spots are not the only thing on the upcoming ballot in Canyon County. Come November 3rd residents will decide if the county will get a new jail.

"It's a matter of personal safety, family safety, and quality of living in Canyon County," said Craig Hanson, a Captain with the Canyon County Sheriff's Office.

And Captain Hanson says those things are in jeopardy because the Canyon County Jail is to small.

"The number of officers on the street has increased, we have increased judges, we've increased population by more than double in Canyon County and in that same time frame we have not increased any hard jail beds," he said.

Hanson says there are 7,000 warrants out in the county but no place to put the criminals right now. Their solution: a new jail.

"This is the time to build," said Hanson.

Next Tuesday residents can vote on a $46 million bond for a 652 bed facility. The site for the proposed jail is along Highway 20/26 headed toward Notus.

Supporters say if approved the bond will cost the average homeowner less than $30 in taxes per year but not everyone is sold on the idea.

"I am definitely going to vote no," said Glenn Koch, a Canyon County resident.

Koch has been putting up "Vote No" signs throughout the county. With the down economy he says trying to pass a bond for a new jail doesn’t make sense.

"We don't need any increase in our property taxes," said Koch.

He admits the county may need a new jail but thinks it should be more centrally located to help keep costs down.

"It's just the wrong time and the wrong place."

But Captain Hanson says new jail or not taxpayers will have to help foot the bill if their forced to send inmates to other facilities.

"If it doesn't pass than we are going to have a difficult time maintaining and holding inmates," he said.

The county needs a super majority for the bond to pass.

Election day is November 3rd and only Canyon County residents are allowed to vote on the jail bond.
