BOISE - Idaho officials are getting the keys to a brand new capitol. The state capitol commission says the project came in slightly under budget.

The makeover started back in of April of 2007 after lawmakers voted to renovate and expand the statehouse. That was back when the Dow Jones was peaking at nearly 14,000 and Idaho unemployment was less than three percent.

But since then the economy tanked and some of the budget items may raise a few eyebrows. For example, $1,000 for door stops on the second floor, $1,500 for an ornamental handrail, or sandstone veneer that cost taxpayers $34,000.

Project manager Jan Frew says quality costs more.

“Our goal was to do work that would last another one hundred years, and you pay for quality materials,” Frew said.
