Methadone clinic has some upset over location

Summary

A group of Hillcrest neighbors in Boise are concerned after learning a methadone clinic has opened up shop in their neighborhood. They say this kind of clinic should not be allowed in a residential area with a school nearby but Boise city's zoning ordinances say otherwise.

Methadone clinic has some upset over location
BOISE - Neighbors Dan Loughrey and Leslie Bishop have questions about the services "Raise the Bottom Training and Consulting" provides to people.

"They don't want their children exposed to this sort of thing," said Loughrey.

Health and Welfare says "Raise the Bottom" is methadone clinic providing outpatient treatment. Methadone is a narcotic used to help drug addicts fight withdrawal and dependency.

But the clinic has some neighbors concerned with the kind of traffic it could bring to their neighborhood especially with an elementary school close by and a school bus stop located across the street.

"I think that treatment facilities are incredibly important. I think they need to be run but I think they need to be run in such a way that they don't put neighborhoods at risk," said Bishop.

Boise Planning and Zoning officials say the clinic is located in what's called a C-1 neighborhood commercial zone. It's zoning that allows for various types of medical offices. And officials say that includes the methadone clinic. Because of the business met zoning ordinances a public hearing was not required.

2 News tried contacting the director of the clinic to pass along neighbors concerns but the clinic was closed when we went by and our phone call has not been returned.

While neighbors say they're not on a witch hunt they just feel the treatment this clinic provides doesn't belong in people's backyards.

"I just really feel that we need the opportunity to take a good look at the issue and see if there isn't some middle ground for everybody," said Bishop.

Planning and Zoning officials are scheduled to meet with operators of clinic Wednesday morning. They say their office has received a number of phone calls from neighbors expressing the same concerns.

Right now, there are three methadone clinics in Idaho including "Raise the Bottom" and all three are located in Boise. But neighbors say the other two situated off Cole Road and Eagle Road are more commercials.

Neighbors say it could be time to re-evaluate city's C-1 zoning ordinance.
