BOISE – Parents out there might not like the idea of their kids chugging tons of caffeine and sugar.
Officer Jermaine Galloway with the Boise Police Department says, if parents and teachers looked a little closer at those cans, they might be shocked.
"They are sitting right there and they are drinking a beer right in front of you and you don't even know it," Galloway said.
"With these alcoholic energy drinks the are very covert you have to know what you are looking for," said Matt McCarter with the State Department of Education.
Cleverly designed the huge cans can pack quite punch unfortunately, it’s the liver that gets hit and most parents and teachers have no idea.
"Recently i had a teacher tell me i can't believe how much i really don't know," Galloway said.
Underage drinking is nothing new but the products out there are. So whats a parent to do?
Officer Galloway says take a walk through the liquor isle and see what’s out there.
Some of the drinks contain 12 percent alcohol.
“When they bring these home or take these to school and you don't know that an alcoholic energy drink even exits and they are drinking it right in front of you,” Galloway said.
For this reason officer Galloway and McCarter have made huge efforts to get the word out to parents, but also students. McCarter says students need to understand the dangers of drinking and addiction.
In a survey done by the State Department of Education alcohol consumption doubles between 6th and 8th grade. A staggering 60% of surveyed seniors reported using alcohol.
With these sweet tasting highly alcoholic drinks it could end up being more problematic than ever expected.
