Sleepy teen crashes 'white pearl' into Lake Coeur d'Alene

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A 16-year-old northern Idaho boy is mourning his crumpled car but thanking his lucky stars after surviving a midnight plunge into the icy waters of Coeur d'Alene Lake.

Dylan Eastin, who is 16, says he fell asleep at the wheel last Friday while driving home from his girlfriend's home on Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive.

He told the Coeur d'Alene Press, "My eyes were drooping, then I'd snap back awake."

Too late, it appears. His white 1994 Ford Probe took out six fence posts along the road, then plunged off a 25-foot cliff with the driver's side of the vehicle hitting the water first. Water started gushing in.

Clad in a ski coat, jeans and tennis shoes, Eastin managed to swim out the passenger's window, reach the shore and flag down a passing motorist.

His car, however, is totaled. Eastin laments, "My white pearl."
