Man charged in Seattle killings captured in California

Police surround the murder scene on Dec. 22.

SEATTLE -- A man who prosecutors say murdered his girlfriend and 13-week-old daughter was arrested Monday morning in Santa Cruz, California.

Seattle police did not provide details about the arrest, but spokeswoman Renee Witt said Daniel Hicks was caught thanks to "good old fashioned police work."

Hicks is suspected of fatally shooting Jennifer and Emma Morgan at their home in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood.

The victims were found dead Dec. 22 by Jennifer's mother, and Hicks has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

In probable cause documents filed in King County Superior Court, investigators say that the already-rocky relationship between Hicks and Jennifer became worse when she became pregnant.

He allegedly had threatened Morgan during the pregnancy, at one point trying to make her get an abortion.

Hicks' half-sister told investigators that he had become paranoid and refused offers of help. Investigators also talked with Hicks' brother, who is currently serving in Iraq, and confirmed that Hicks had a number of weapons and a cache of ammunition, according to court documents.

Morgan's mother told police Hicks was upset that the child was a girl and started to claim that he was not Emma's father. The relationship finally got to the point where Jennifer decided Hicks had to move out of the home they had shared with Morgan's parents, the papers said.

A note was found in the home that Hicks left for his brother, apologizing and saying that he was "sick, like Grandpa." Hicks' grandfather, Dean Hicks, killed his wife and himself in 1983.

Witt said Seattle police detectives were flying out Monday afternoon to interview Hicks in Santa Cruz.
