Melba School District asks voters for help
MELBA - "I understand these are very, very tough votes," said Bob Larson, superintendent of the Melba School District.

Larson says the district is going to voters to approve a $600,000 supplemental school levy because the current one is running out.

He says while the decision was not an easy one for school board members it was necessary.

"It would go to being able to operate different educational and athletic programs that we have here," Larson said.

With $128.5 million in looming state budget cuts Melba alone may have to make up more than $1 million come next year.

"I wish that with the cuts it makes the districts look at where they spend their money a little bit - maybe a little bit wiser," said Tonya Barber, a parent of Melba High School.

And district officials agree. In conjunction with the levy election Larson says they plan to reduce next years spending by $200,000.

"We're suppose to be teaching and giving our kids an education so it makes me frustrated that they are taking things away," said Niki Knopp, a Melba resident.

Larson says the proposed levy would not change the existing tax rate.

Meridian, Caldwell, and the Kuna School Districts have all run similar elections in the past.

"If you don't have any other revenue sources I think you just about have to," Larson said.

He says right now Melba is doing what it has to do to keep students moving forward.

"I would support it yes," Knopp said.

And the district hopes other voters will agree.

The election is April 6th. There will be polling places in Ada, Canyon, and Owyhee Counties since Melba School District serves three counties.

The district will be holding public meetings over the next few weeks to answer voter questions.
