BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Republican 1st District U.S. House candidate Raul Labrador has the backing of former U.S. Rep. Bill Sali.
In a press conference at the Idaho Capitol on Friday, Sali endorsed Labrador, a GOP state House member from Eagle.
Labrador is facing Republican Vaughn Ward, a U.S. Marine and former John McCain aide, in May's primary.
Sali told reporters that sending Vaughn Ward to Washington, D.C., would be "like sending a Boy Scout to Iraq."
Sali says, "It's a treacherous place. He's not prepared to go there."
Labrador was a vocal opponent of Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's gas tax plan in the 2009 session - and Sali says Labrador has a proven record of standing up to even his own party on matters of principle.
Sali served one term in Congress, losing in 2008 to Democrat Walt Minnick.
