BOISE, Idaho (AP) _ Saying he is not gay and has never been, Idaho Senator Larry Craig has denied any inappropriate conduct despite an arrest in an airport restroom in Minneapolis.
At the same time, Craig apologized for placing ''a cloud'' over the people of Idaho.
Making a statement to reporters today, Craig says he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge earlier this month because he didn't seek counsel and because he wanted to make the matter go away.
He says he was under stress at the time because of continuing pressure from the Idaho Statesman newspaper. Craig accused the paper of being ''vicious'' and ''relentless.''
He also says he believes he can continue to be an effective leader. Craig says he's still scheduled next month to announce his intentions about whether he will seek re-election.
Meanwhile in Washington, Senate Republican leaders have called for an ethics committee to review the case.
