Neighbors 'on high alert' after rash of burglaries at homes in foothills

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Police are warning homeowners about brazen burglars who've broken into eight homes since November in the north Boise foothills.

Two of the burglaries happened this past weekend. Investigators say the thieves have been cutting power and phone lines to houses before breaking into a back door.

"It's pretty unusual for these neighborhoods," said Tanya Vaughan, who lives in the area. "It's actually pretty unusual, I think, for Boise in general, but it's interesting to hear that there's a little bit more intelligence behind some of these robberies, so I think that that will put us all on high alert."

Officers say the thieves target homes without any lights on inside after dark, and many of the ones they break into have backyards that border open space and trails. They take expensive jewelry and even passports.

Vaughan says her community is a trusting one but the burglaries are causing them to keep their eyes peeled.
