Senator McGee arrested on DUI and grand theft charges
MERIDIAN, Idaho - State Senator John McGee was charged with DUI and grand theft after police found the Senate Republican Caucus Chairman sleeping in the back of a crashed SUV that wasn't his.

Police told KBOI2 News that McGee was seen in Boise Saturday night golfing - but that no one is really sure, including McGee, how he ended up in Meridian in the back seat of an Excursion that wasn't his.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Meridian homeowners on Knapp Place said they woke up to their neighbor's Excursion, with 24-foot trailer attached, jack-knifed between the fence and garage.

"He ran up and down the road barefooted. Then he ran back here to the Excursion and got into the back seat and just stayed there," said Joe Carleton, homeowner.

Carleton said he was shocked to hear that the man asleep in his backyard was a senator.

"I asked him what he was doing, and he thought he was in the promise land and he was very dazed and confused," said Carleton.

"I asked him, where were you? And he said I was golfing and I want to get to Jackpot. And I go, well it's 3 o' clock in the morning you don't want to go to Jackpot, so I was really concerned about his mental state."

Police said McGee was cooperative but failed a field sobriety test.

"For us it's business as usual. We handle these all the same way and go through protocol collecting the evidence," said Lt. Cody Aldrich with Ada County.

Carleton said he thinks the senator must have thought his driveway was the busy Victory Road.

"The neighbors were thankful that he pulled into here with the trailer because if he would've gone down the road, who knows what would've happened," said Carleton.

McGee blew a BAC of .15 and was also charged with grand theft for taking off in the Excursion.

Still police aren't quite sure how he got from the golf course in Boise to a home in Meridian miles away.

McGee faces arraignment Monday at 1:30 p.m. MT in Ada County court.
