Spotlight on teen pregnancy impacting students?
BOISE - Enrollment is up at the Marian Pritchett School (for teen mothers) in Boise. This time last year there were 26 girls enrolled. Now there are 50.

Rhonda Thomas is a program coordinator there. She said news of Sarah Palin's pregnant 17 year old daughter, Bristol, has been a hot topic for the girls in political science class.

"They feel that she'll probably have a harder time because of the fact that she's coming from a very popularized family and it may affect how she deals with things," said Rhonda Thomas.

She said there is still a stigma associated with being young, and pregnant. With all this media spotlight on teen mothers, is this still true?

"It's a lot more common for girls to get pregnant now these days in high school and I don't think it's as big a deal as it was before," said Rachael Uzzel, a senior in high school.

"It's accepted, but there's still those people who don't agree with it and do talk about them behind their backs," said Kaytlin Schrader, one of Uzzel's classmates.

Some parents said it boils down to family values.

"In our family, teenage pregnancy or pregnancy out of marriage is not really an option," said Nate Spencer, a high school parent.

Back at the Marian Pritchett School, teen mothers are dealing with the reality of motherhood. Thomas said her girls aren't there because they think it's cool. She said even though times are changing, they deal with the stigma every day. The only difference is the community seems to be offering more support.

"I think that the students, the girls and anyone that's pregnant are the ones sort of making that change because I see them wanting to do better for their lives," she said.

Thomas said it's great to see girls taking responsibility, but she hopes having a baby at such a young age never becomes a fad.
