New bumper sticker helps track teen drivers
EAGLE - Parents can't always be with their teen once they start driving.
But now an Eagle woman says parents can keep a close eye on what their teen is doing behind the wheel.
"We are waiting (to let her drive) until she turns 16-years-old," said Francesca Murphy, a local mother.
In the next year, like many parents, Murphy's 15-year-old daughter will get her license.
"Accidents happen and we're not always the one who causes the accident," Murphy said.
Fellow mom Debbie Pruett knows the feeling.
"He (my son) takes the driving courses but it's just not enough," Pruett said.
Pruett is making her 16-year-old son wait to drive his car until he gets more practice. But when he gets behind the wheel she knows he may be a little more careful thanks to a bumper sticker.
"If they do happen to see something of concern they'll call the 1-800 number," she said.
Pruett recently created and launched MyTeen.com, a website for parents to keep tabs on their teen drivers with the help of others.
"I think that teenager's attitude toward driving is going to be different when there is a bumper sticker on their car," Pruett said.
Here's how it works: A parent subscribes to the website, leaving email and phone numbers for contact purposes. A bumper sticker with a specialized identification number is then sent.
Parents put the sticker on the back of their teens car and if they are caught driving irresponsibly by another driver they can leave an automated message via phone or email with the sticker number for the parent.
The parent is then notified by phone or email of the message.
"If I were a parent and my child were driving inappropriately, or at excessive speeds I would want to know," Murphy said.
And any extra tool to help protect teen drivers, is one Murphy thinks makes good road sense.
MyTeen.com launched two weeks ago. Right now, Pruett says there are about 20 subscribers around the country but none in Idaho yet. She thinks that will change as more parents find out about the site.
