MERIDIAN - A Meridian elementary school teacher is put on leave after parents say he and a student got into an argument. Now some parents are outraged, and want to know what's happening to the teacher, and feel the school district isn't giving them any answers.
"I just want to know why the school has let him go when he does so much for those kids, I mean they are all devastated," said Brande Ehrman.
And she's not alone.
"It's really sad and scary, especially for the teachers, for all teachers," said Melissa Slunder, a fellow Chief Joseph Elementary school parent.
More than a dozen parents showed up at Monday's school board meeting to show support for their children's fifth grade teacher. They say the Chief Joseph teacher was accused of having a confrontation with another student last week but was wrongly let go.
"My daughter told me about this naughty little boy that her teacher had had to deal with on the playground and that the boy told her teacher to 'Shut up,'" said Ehrman.
Meridian School District administrators say they are not allowed to talk about the alleged incident because it's a personnel matter, but they did confirm the teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave.
"You just have to be cautious," said Dennis Cartwright, director of education for the College of Idaho.
When it comes to student management Cartwright says teachers have a tough job.
"It's a very fine line for teachers and one of the things that we really emphasize with our students is that you have to keep your emotions under control," said Cartwright.
Cartwright says if a teacher feels a situation with student is ever getting out of control it's always a good idea to get another adult involved.
And that's what these parents want to do now in order to get their children's teacher back in the class.
"I''m worried if they won't tell us what happened here, what else at the school are they not telling us about," Ehrman said.
The school district says the incident is under investigation. They don't know how long it will last but for the time being, they say a substitute teacher has been placed inside the classroom.
