NYSSA, Ore., - The Nyssa School District says it plans to layoff 20 employees for the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Don Grotting said Tuesday that the district plans to eliminate two counselors, three technology teacher positions, an administrative position and 14 teacher aids.
In November of 2008, the state had planned on a $6.4 billion budget for Oregon schools leaving the school district with $10.5 million in funds. With the deteriorating economy, however, the state had to reduce its education budget to $5.4 billion - allotting $8.8 million for Nyssa schools.
The school district hopes to use federal stimulus funds which would might help bring back some of those lost positions, but school officials are still sorting through the rules and regulations on how that money can be spent.
Grotting also said the district will lose its school resource officer, which is contracted with the local police department for $60,000.
