Prosecutor: Man burns toddler with cigarette
CALDWELL - A Nampa man has been arrested for severely injuring a 2-year-old child.

John Bujak, Canyon County prosecutor, says Mario Gonzalez, 23, burned the girl 15 times on her toe with a cigarette. He apparently harmed the child because he was frustrated that she wouldn't stop crying.

He also hit her head several times, broke both of her arms and punched her in the stomach, officials say. Gonzalez is the boyfriend of the toddler's mother.

"We looked at the nature of the charges and the nature of the incident and we had some concerns," said Erica Kallin, deputy prosecutor. "We wanted to make sure he was held accountable for his actions given the fact that this wasn't a one time incident."

Bujak said it was unclear whether the couple lived together, but he said the toddler was in the care of Gonzalez at the time the injuries were inflicted.

Officials say that the mother apparently knew about the injuries the child sustained - but at this point prosecutors don't plan to pursue charges against the toddler's mother.

Nampa Police says Gonzalez was arrested on Tuesday after he came to the police station for an interview. His bond has been set at $250,000 and is scheduled to be in court June 15.
