Police say the vehicle was severely damaged, with the wheel broken off. The witness who saw Atkinson crash then apparently got out of the vehicle and asked if he was OK. The driver said he was OK but then fled on foot.

Police located him at a house a couple blocks away. Officials say his blood alcohol content was during two tests were .15 and .17 - twice the legal limit. He was booked on DUI charges and leaving the scene of an accident.

Prosecutors could add more charges because of his age.
