BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Legislature's minority Democrats are pushing Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter to delay boosting insurance premiums for part-time state workers.

In some instances, monthly premiums could quadruple after Nov. 1 to about $400 for those working between 20 and 36 hours weekly, at agencies including the Department of Fish and Game and at state colleges and universities.

About 1,007 part-time workers will be affected, helping save Idaho some $900,000 annually in taxpayer funds. The total savings, including federal contributions, will be $2.7 million.

Democratic lawmakers contend these hikes were announced this spring by Department of Administration Director Mike Gwartney before the Legislature had a chance to weigh in.

Jon Hanian, Otter's spokesman, said the governor was aware of their request but said he couldn't comment on how Otter would respond.

State worker union representatives demanded Otter act quickly, before the increased premiums are deducted from employees' paychecks next month.
