Vet: 'I don't think it is Vietnam'
MERIDIAN - Don Landin like many Americans has questions over the war in Afghanistan. And as a someone who served in Vietnam he wants answers.

"I was a Naval Observer," Landin said.

Landin listened as President Obama outlined his new strategy for Afghanistan.

"The 30,000 additional troops that I am announcing tonight will deploy in the first part of 2010 - the fastest pace possible - so that they can target the insurgency and secure key population centers."

Landin admits 30,000 more troops is a lot.

"I feel for the families who have young men and young women and some not so young men and women in the National Guard and the Reserves that are going to be going to Afghanistan."

But he also believes the men and women on the ground want to get the job done and they need support.

Landin says while he likes the idea of a time table for withdrawal he also believes: "That President Obama is a little premature with his 2010 draw down and his 2011 pull out completely."

Some at home have started comparing this war to the war in Vietnam.
But even after eight years of fighting in Afghanistan this former Vietnam vet disagrees.

"In Vietnam we were alone - that was a unilateral action by the United States," Landin said.

And he believes the Afghanistan War won't become Vietnam if government supports the military and the American public understands why: From the constant bombardment of terrorist threats and that's what we are over there to stop."

With the President's troop surge it is estimated to push price tag as high as $75 billion a year.
