More than 200 dogs rescued from cold, dangerous conditions in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. – More than 200 neglected dogs will arrive at the Oregon Humane Society in the next couple of days to spare them from the arctic chill and other dangerous conditions.

About a 100 of those dogs are expected from Tillamook County. They were taken from an overwhelmed breeder. The other 100 dogs are from a breeder in the Burns area.

Some of the dogs from Burns were living in underground holes covered with planks. Others were chained to farm equipment and were not able to get out of the cold at all.

The dogs were living off cattle carcasses from a meat processing plant and the bones from the carcasses could be seen on the ground.

When rescue teams arrived, they said they found at least one puppy frozen to death.

A spokesman at the Oregon Humane Society said they are in need of donations.

David Lytle said the kinds of donations the Humane Society needs include ‘shredded paper for [the] puppies. A lot of them are not housebroken at all,” he said. “We need towels; we need large dog crates, because we’ve got to move around a lot of dogs. And puppy food would be a big help, because we’ve got a lot of puppies coming in.”

The Harney County Sheriff’s department arrested three people on animal neglect charges, and the owners surrendered ownership of the animals which allowed the Humane Society to move in for the rescue process.

Despite the living conditions and being neglected, the Human Society said the dogs are friendly and like being around people. They said they hope to find homes for the dogs in the next couple of weeks.
