BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Many are wondering if young kids should be allowed to use fully automatic weapons after an instructor was accidentally shot and killed in Arizona by a nine-year-old girl.

In Idaho you have to be 18 to purchase a gun. Although, you can get a hunting license at 10 if you complete a hunter safety course.

But on private property, like a company gun range, the rules are pretty much left up to the owners on who can fire the weapons.

At places like Impact Guns in Boise you can rent fully automatic guns to use on the range. Manager Cindy Pratt-Carrell said their policy requires an instructor to be on hand no matter what their age is.

Often times even veteran shooters aren't used to the recoil of a fully automatic weapon and instructors make sure to help.

Pratt-Carrell said they don't have a limit on age, but it's up to an instructor on who can shoot. They had a 10-year-old shoot with his father a couple of weeks ago. She said it has more to do with knowledge.

"As long as they are comfortable with them, and they have good safety actions, we don't really specify an age," said Pratt-Carrell.
