Appeals court upholds $3 million judgment over firing police lieutenant

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a $3.2 million judgment against the city of Coeur d'Alene for firing a police lieutenant.

Dan Dixon, a 17-year veteran of the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, and his wife Heidi Dixon sued the city in 2009. The contended his firing that summer followed a string of frivolous complaints against him by a subordinate.

The Spokesman-Review reported Friday that city attorney Mike Gridley says he will review the decision and consult with outside legal counsel to consider what to do next.

The appeal was argued Oct. 1 before a three-judge appeals court panel meeting at the University of Idaho in Moscow. The court upheld the jury verdict Thursday.
