Buhl woman steals checkbook; faces forgery charges

BUHL, Idaho (AP) — A 33-year-old Buhl woman stole an 82-year-old woman's checkbook and spent $2,000 on jewelry, beer and cigarettes has been charged with eight counts of forgery, police said.

A bank employee alerted authorities, and police obtained surveillance video from several stores where the checks were passed. The Buhl woman, Shon Leslie Briggs, was found to have been forging the checks.

Police say the 82-year-old woman told bank employees she went without heart and seizure medications for three weeks because she couldn't afford it from the money Briggs was taking.

In a story published Sunday the Times-News reports that Shon Leslie Briggs is being held in the Twin Falls County Jail on $10,000 bail.

Briggs is next scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
