Who killed Popeye the pug in Boise neighborhood?
BOISE, Idaho - An 11-year-old pug named Popeye was killed in southeast Boise over the weekend. Now, the owners are left asking, who would shoot Popeye?
Last Wednesday, Popeye slipped out the door. Mark and his wife Denise searched for their beloved pug but couldn't find him and immediately posted on Facebook and Craigslist. That's when they got a call from an employee at Broadway Veterinary Hospital.
"I said oh my gosh, did he get hit by a car? What happened? She started to get tearful because she has pugs and she said actually the doctor believes he's been shot," said Popeye's owner Denise Engebrecht. (Additional Photos of Popeye >>>)
A man driving down Gekeler Lane near Ridgefield Drive saw the pug laying in the road and brought Popeye to Dr. Darrin Everett.
"I gave him some pain medication, an injection of morphine and within a couple minutes he passed away unfortunately," said Everett.
It was less than 45 minutes from the time Popeye got out of the house to when he arrived at the vet.
Everett said the bullet went all the way through the dog, breaking a bone and leaving massive trauma to his organs.
A sign now hangs where Popeye was found asking that anyone who saw or heard anything contact Boise Police.
"That someone would go around and just shoot an animal, it's just not right and we want people to know, we want our neighbors to know, we want something to be done about it and we hope that who ever it is, is punished for it," said Engebrecht.
Anyone with information about the dog shooting is asked to call 343-COPS.

I'd like to find this person and gun them down personally..........
So their out of control dog ran up on someone's kid, and the parent shot the dog to protect their children. Who cares.Â
@Vin King Yeah.  Out of control Pugs.  That's been a real problem.  Probably was licking the kids ankles off.  It was self-defense!
@Vin King Yeah, pugs are so dangerous, you dumb bastard.
@Vin King Discharging a fire arm near children is a far greater threat to their safety than a 10lbs dog.  Sounds like these imaginary parents you're describing need a visit from CPS.
You seem to have information that was not in the story - care to tell us more?
I am so sorry for; There are no words made yet for the loss. Hope u two will have more in the future...
maybe they should of kept a better eye on the dog. Again why is this even in the news???
@Bigs Ones The point of the story is someone SHOT a dog on the street. Do you think it is okay to randomly shoot animals? Quite frankly, you're a jerk.Â
@Bigs Ones It was a freaking MISTAKE!!!!! Ever made a mistake in your life? He slipped out the door when my husband came in. He would typically walk to the same bush in the yard, have a sniff and come back in. We were trying to calm our other dog down who recently had surgery on her knee and we missed it. We feel awful about it. You'd think we would have just found him out in the neighborhood but no, someone shot him within 1/2 hour. It's upsetting and you would never understand it. I hope you are treated more respectfully if you ever make a mistake and feel awful.
You ever owned a dog or cat A-Butt
So sorry to read about this. I have two pugs and couldn't imagine their lives ending like that. I hope whoever did it is caught.
How awful :( He was so adorable. What kind of SICK person does this? I hope the rotten person who did this is caught. I'm so sorry, how heartbreaking :'(
I am sorry for your loss. :(
Do not expect a jogger or their 6 year old child to be able to judge just how dangerous the dog is snapping at their heels. Dog size and owners memories have nothing to do with it when seconds count. IF the dog was shot during this type of encounter, they probably did the right thing by jogging off. No fight. No wasting of police time. No wasting of lawyer time. If you as a dog owner disagree with this humble opinion, restrain your dog at all times. If you don't know where your dog is for 45 minutes, your option is to buy a new dog. Feel grateful that you are not responding to a suit for consequential damages.    Take better care of Popeye II. Â

@Ponder There's nothing wrong with being armed and willing to defend yourself against a marauding animal, especially the two legged kind. But come on, have you ever seen a Pug? Are we to believe that this little dog made a flying leap at someone's neck like the killer Rabbit of Caerbannog? That lethal force was required? You should examine the Use of Force Continuum, compare it with what your peers perceive as correct behavior, and reconsider whether the scenario really called for death, or if some other motive prompts your response, such as sadism.
Even my pitbulls never tried such. A small dog, like a pug would have been protected. Again Ma'm, I am so sorry for your loss. People just don't understand.
@Ponder You are a sick, sick person to not understand the attachment people form with an animal, and how unreasonable it is to shoot a PUG.Â
@Ponder I am Popeye's momma and it's easy to say these things when you don't know the details.  Popeye's gunshot wound was through the side of his abdomen, broke his pelvic bone and exited near his rectum in a nearly level path.  I'm no expert, but you can't shoot a dog that is only a foot tall and create that kind of bullet path.  The vet's necropsy rules out your theory on being shot down upon.  I'm choosing to forgive you for this insensitivity assuming you didn't know these details. I truly hope if you face some difficulty in your life that you will remember what grace looks like and hope people give you more of it in your time of need. Â
Sorry for your loss. Popeye was obviously much loved.
@Ponder i fully agree with you ponder.. im not quite as extreme but.. if i happened (key word) to have a .45 on me, and a dog runs after me (and it doesnt seem to be playing around) you bet your butt ill blow a slug right through it and not lose a wink of sleep.  i love dogs, i love all animals, but i value human life more.. you bet your butt id do it and go to sleep peacefully.   furthermore, if it was just someone blatantly killing the dog just to kill, then thats evil obviously.  please pet worshippers im not against animals- i am PRO gun and bodily defense.   lmao april makin fun of you...  what a loser?   take care of popeye 2 i like that, its a bit cold but gets the point across.  click click boom.
@Dan Gordon So you're another big tough guy afraid of a small middle-aged dog? Luckily for you you have a gun to make up for your shortcomings.
What a terrible, awful person you are. Not to mention cowardly, if you would be afraid of a Pug.
@Ponder Perhaps you should do more of what your moniker suggests. You are the type of individual who would be the first to complain if anything happened to you. We've got your number.Â
@Ponder You are pathetic. This was not a jogger or a parent defending a 6 year old. Also, I would think people can tell the difference between a pit bull and a pug. This sounds like some jackass looking to get their kicks. I am a cyclist and often encounter dogs in rural areas. I do not carry a .45 around, but a can of mace. It is more effective and does not weigh you down. Beside if I did have a .45 with me I would probably end up using it on people who feel the rule the road.
@Pablo  Actually Popeye's housemate IS A PITBULL,  home recovering from some affliction to its leg. I am sure none of its neighbors would have anything negative to say about a PITBULL occasionally loose in the yard.
@Ponder I would really like to meet you. Someone needs to show you this situation and you can even meet my adorable and sweet stafforshire terrier, and my neighbors love her by the way. You truly have NO idea what you are talking about yet you are being rude in every single news story about Popeye, why? Why don't you honestly consider meeting with us and seeing the answers for yourself? We are honest and responsible people, we could change your entire opinion of this. Somehow I think you'd never even consider it. I think you're happiest hiding behind your "Ponder" name and trying to be mean and hateful. How can have enjoyment in life being this way? I am flat out serious...if you want to meet us, please let me know. We will be happy to talk to you and help you understand. We have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. I really hope you can find peace in your heart. I am a person of forgiveness and given the right conversation with you, I could get there but we'd have to have that conversation first. If you want to talk, email me at markandneesee@cableone.net.Â
@Ponder Boy I know when I'm out jogging I always carry a gun. If this was the situation (and I have not heard or read that it was) you just shoot it and leave it to die? Ooohh watch out for the killer pugs!
The person that did this has no concious and is definately not man enough to come forward..you are a sorry soul.
