BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - As temperatures around the Treasure Valley drop plumbers are preparing for the number of frozen and broken pipes. They say simple steps can help prevent freezing.

Frozen pipes are more common in mobile homes and older houses which tend to use copper piping. Although experts say that doesn't mean a new home can't experience frozen pipes.

Plumbers say one of the biggest mistakes people make is not disconnecting the hoses from outside faucets. Also leaving foundation vents open can let cold air in the craw space where pipes are exposed.

Even though newer homes have better insulation they can still freeze if you don't take precaution.

Another problem seen by plumber we talked with are people who leave their garage door open for their pets. This can cause pipes on a water heater or water softener to freeze and sometimes burst.
