Thursday was our annual Drive, Drop and Donate fundraiser for the Idaho Foodbank. Preliminary totals have now come in. The Treasure Valley donated nearly $13,000 in cash and about 8150 pounds of food! That is enough to buy about 45,000 meals for Idaho families in need!

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- KBOI is asking you to open your food pantries and your hearts today for our annual Drive, Drop and Donate event.

KBOI TV is teaming up with Bronco Motors, RC Willey, The Idaho Press-Tribune, for the 7th annual Drive, Drop and Donate campaign - the annual food collection drive that helps restock the shelves at the Idaho Food Bank.

Anyone can come donate from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at nine different locations throughout the Treasure Valley. And don't let bad weather deter you from donating, because volunteers will be out at the locations to grab the food from your cars, so you don't even need to get out.

The Community Engagement Coordinator at the Idaho Foodbank says right now is a great time to donate.

"with the holidays, we see a lot of food drives, but after Christmas those really drop off and our shelves start to get a little bare, so we really rely on the community especially during this time of year because hunger doesn't take a holiday," said Becky Slighter.

If you're looking to donate only a few items the Idaho Foodbank says canned vegtables and peanut butter are really important, but anything helps. Specialty items for people with allergies are also highly appreciated.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items as well as taking monetary donations for the Idaho Food Bank. The collection effort will be broadcast throughout the day on KBOI-TV, Channel 2 and CW 2.2. You may look for additional coverage on KBOI2.com and on the station's Facebook page.

The Idaho Food Bank and their statewide network of partner agencies provided 10.57 million pounds of emergency food to families, children and senior citizens during 2011.

That works out to 8.8 million meals for hungry Idahoans and represents a 90 percent increase in food distribution since 2008. Obviously, there is a great need for this food.
