House OKs law enforcement gun measure
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A measure that makes it a misdemeanor for law enforcement officials to help enforce any new federal firearms restrictions or registration requirements has made it through the House.
The proposal approved Monday on a 55-13 vote could bring jail time and fines to sheriff deputies and police officers — or other government workers — who help federal agents confiscate any newly banned firearms or ammunition.
Boise Republican Rep. Mark Patterson says the bill aims to head off federal attempts to outlaw semi-automatic weapons.
But Democratic opponents argued the bill could lead to law enforcement officers violating their oath of office. Boise Democratic Rep. Holli Woodings says state police take an oath requiring them to uphold both Idaho — and federal — laws.
The measure now heads to the Senate.
