BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - A number of Idaho lawmakers are targeting a topic they say should be taboo on television - premarital sex.
And they're taking a symbolic stand.
Lawmakers are against references to premarital sex in dramas, comedies, reality and talk shows as well as advertisements.
"We need to take a stand and stand up for for the morality of what is best for the citizens of Idaho," said Rep. Darrell Bolz, (R-Caldwell).
The measure that easily passed the house state affairs committee would urge the federal government and the FCC to prohibit the portrayal, even implied, or even the discussion of premarital sex on TV between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The measure that's moving forward is not a bill. Under the rules of the Idaho Legislature, it's called a Joint Memorial and is simply a symbolic statement.
People KBOI News talked with call the effort a waste of time.
"I think its infringement on freedom of speech, don't want the government telling me what I can or cannot watch," Viola Hauck of Boise said.
Supporters say the Idaho Constitution requires government to protect the virtue and purity of the home.

@AmandaMarcotte The Idaho legislature is one of our nation's leading laboratories for concocting new strains of both.
@AmandaMarcotte I'm sure Sen. Craig would be proud of his state.
@AmandaMarcotte Iâm at a loss for words over that one Amanda. Never going to Idaho!

I thought government was to protect Our Precious Bodily Fluids....?
@GrumpusNation Perhaps they should build a shield. Made from potatoes. That should ensure the purity of their precious bodily fluids...
@CaffeineAndHate Speaking of feeling moistâ¦
@GrumpusNation Indeed!
@CaffeineAndHate Inseminatedly.
There is nothing wrong with premarital sex. Â Republicans are for small government except when they are not!Â
What a concept.
my kids wtch tv. thanks...
Let me see. In Idaho it will be illegal to watch 2 unmarried people make LOVE on TV. But you can watch that same couple come out with assault rifles and KILL dozens of people, and that's ok? Something is wrong with this picture.
WOW! You hit the nail on the head now...AMEN! In a message dated 3/15/2013 9:57:51 P.M. Mountain Daylight Time,
Parents can controll the tv...the government should stay out of it
Exactly Donald....PARENTING is the key.
As a Christian, I understand the concern....but that is what PARENTS are for....the Government is NOT our nanny!
Yeah and then the government officials can also drive around drunk too, get arrested and it's no biggie!!! Â But make sure that we don't watch premarital sex.....oh make a law that says kids can't watch tv. Â That makes total sense! Â I am so embarrassed for these people on the news showing their faces talking about this crap!
Where is this concern for family values when Spencer's Gifts is selling dildos in the mall?
We need to use the "gun owners" argument here. It's not the program's fault....
Most adults can't either. But the choice is clear...the PARENTS are responsible for determining what a child watches, NOT Government.
These religious windbags only claim to have sex for the creation of more drones to indoctrinate.
Good luck, I like that idea.. but it will be very difficult.
I vote time and again against the Red party members in this state, to little avail.
Yup..and a goat for every man.
More like Mormon convention...24/7
nice!
Nope..they will look like heroes to their voting base..ensuring re-election. Those things you mentioned? If they solved them then they wouldn't be able to use them to cry about the President.
Yes...we need more freedom in our lives...just not Abortion, smut tv, gay marriage..lol...it goes on.
Freedom of speech is for the speech you DON'T agree with.
You need more classes in logical thought. There are plenty of channels to get quality programming. Besides, banning these shows will affect advertising, which kills jobs. So, are you all anti-job now?
It's like states wanting to ban abortions and then end welfare, foodstamps and every other social program. Stupidity is a Red thing.
Don't you just hate these cretins?
We have plenty of morals. What we have is a lack of parental supervision.
What a waste of Idaho taxpayer time and tax money. Â Who are the rest of the morons who supported this?
KEEP YOUR Â PAINTS ZIPPED, Â UP AND THE Â LEGS CROSSED,Â
KIDS DO NOT ASKED TO BE BORN. BUT THEY CATCH ALL OF THE HELL??
Good news "NO" ruin your sex life, Â "takes all OF the mystic AWAY, Â JUST A ANOTHER JOB????
What a shame that we have no moral standards anymore!
Can't the law makers of Idaho worry about important things not our tv watching its none of there business at all. I swear the longer I live here the better n better Oregon sounds to me and I hate oregon
Next they will be using their drones to spy in our windows to see if we are watching banned programs. Aren't there more important things our legislators should concern themselves with? If not, then it's time for them to go home!
%s Actually, Rep. Bolz is usually one of the good rational guys. I'm as boggled by this one as you are. %s
Experts agree that there is a phase of personality development called the latency period, during which the healthy child is not interested in sex. This interval from about the age of 5 until adolescence serves a very important biological purpose. It affords a child an opportunity to develop his own resources, his beginning physical and mental strength. Premature interest in sex is unnatural and will arrest or distort the development of the personality. Because children younger than 8 years cannot discriminate between fantasy and reality, they are uniquely vulnerable to learning and adopting as reality the circumstances, attitudes, and behaviors portrayed in entertainment media. Parental watchcare and guidance are so important to the well-being of our children. Children should not be robbed of their innocent years. The children need to be protected. I am in support of our lawmakers urging the Federal Communications Commission to enforce the policy that they have with regards to decency.
What don't they understand about limited government, personal freedom and the government shall not establish religion. This whole idea is based on religious belief. I'm angry and really trying not to be crude but get your fundamentalist religious butts out of our lives. I've never met a child that was harmed by the sight of a womans breasts. It's the parents responsibility to teach morality not the state. And no I'm not an athiest.
@NoneAlmost 70 percent of black children are bornout of wedlock. That's not about religion.
If they want to see what happens when the church and state are the same entity, just go to Iran.
Separation of church and state...I'd rather they argue and realize that they aren't following that simple idea. Then maybe one day I could get married and not have to leave my home and loved ones to do so. That's only one example of something more important. They could be doing much more. Besides, what about the sixth grade and Sex Ed? Are they going to have all teachers teach about the joys, yet seemingly "sinful" actions of premarital sex?
sex is a natural thing if it's moral or immoral.....
that would eliminate more than 3/4 of all tv shows and the networks would definitely not allow this.....wth!!! Keep your religion out of our state! and so does this mean our government turning communist?
Attention Idaho lawmakers....Stat the hell out of my home. I am perfectly capable of deciding for myself what I should and should not watch. If you have a huge problem with television programming simply turn off your set.
Yeh, take the religous crap off the TV. Take religion out of politics period. We don't need religous fanatics running our state or lives!
When are parents going to start taking responsibility for their children instead of the government. Take charge, don't be lazy with yourself or your kids.
