BURLEY, Idaho (AP) - Health and Welfare Department officials say they're watching for signs of a scam after an Idaho woman received a suspicious phone call.
Marca Stephens of Burley told The Times-News she got a recorded call Thursday about her food stamp balance. The balance was higher than expected, so she tried to call the number on the back of her card to verify whether it was legitimate.
She says she accidentally dialed a number that was one digit off, and reached operators who told her they couldn't get her balance because the system was down, but offered her a $100 gift card to Walmart and asked for her credit card number.
Health and Welfare Department spokeswoman Niki Forbing-Orr says scammers could be hoping for misdials or it could be coincidental.
