Drunk driver hits patrol car, officer taken to hospital, police say

MERIDIAN, Idaho (KBOI) -- A Meridian Police officer was taken to the hospital late Wednesday after his patrol vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver, officials say.

Meridian PD says an officer was on a traffic stop at Meridian Road and White Sands at about 10:30 p.m. Before the officer got out of the vehicle, police say the driver of a Ford F150 pickup sideswiped the patrol car.

The driver didn't stop and sped away from the crash, according to a news release. After a short pursuit by the officer, the driver, identified as 37-year-old Jason Adkins, stopped at Meridian Road and McMillan.

MPD says Adkins had slurred speech and was later arrested for excessive driving under the influence. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

The officer was treated and released at a local hospital.
