Nampa teachers to have 14 furloughs in upcoming school year

NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - Teachers in the Nampa School District will face more than a dozen furlough days in the 2013-2014 school year.

The decision was made on Friday by the Nampa School District board of trustees after an emotional morning of negotiations between the board and Nampa Education Association.

Negotiations started off calm, but by the time Friday's negotiations wrapped up, the emotions got heated and most were disappointed.

"I've kept my cool this whole time," said Mandy Simpson, president of the Nampa Education Association. "You have wasted my time - it's insulting and disrespectful."

The teacher's union bumped up their offer to 14 furlough days and insurance cuts, but it wasn't enough. | Full Statement from NEA

The district says more concessions need to be made to wipe out the $3.5 million deficit caused by an accounting error.

The teacher's contract can be amended, but time is running out. The deadline for the district to submit a balanced budget to the state is Monday.
