Otter makes selection for state Senate vacancy

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter has appointed state Rep. Janie Ward-Engelking to replace a departing state senator.

Otter announced Friday the appointment of Ward-Engelking to the post vacated when former Sen. Branden Durst relocated to western Washington.

Ward-Engelking was one of three possibilities submitted by Democrats to Otter, and the No. 1 choice by officials in Boise Legislative District 18.

Ward-Engelking, a retired teacher, will fill the final year of Durst's two-year term.

The appointment creates a vacancy in the state House of Representatives.

That means the District 18 Democratic Legislative Committee must now submit three names to Otter to fill that seat.
