Police officer cleared in deadly shooting

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - The Bonner County Prosecuting Attorney Louis Marshall says no charges will be filed against a Coeur D'Alene police officer after he shot and killed an armed suspect. The assailant was advancing on the officer armed with 2 knives.

A body camera worn by Officer Spencer Mortensen captured the August 25th incident, clearing him of any wrongdoing.

Marshall says he believes the suspect, 35 year old Eric Johnston of Dalton Gardens advanced toward the officer with the intent to commit suicide by cop.

Marshal also says Mortensen clearly announced himself and tried to stop the situation from escalating but Johnston wouldn't cooperate and walked toward the officer. Mortensen fired 5 shots, killing Johnston.
