BOISE, Idaho - You might be surprised to hear an Illinois lawyer has overwhelmingly proven to be the most popular president among Idahoans for the second year running.

"Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president because he abolished slavery and that's really important," says Mackenzie Etchells, a Boise resident.

"Lincoln, because he had the fortitude to keep the nation together and the strength and wisdom to keep us united," says Kristen Dallmann, a Meridian resident.

Diana Cross says her favorite president is the son of another president, but it's not who you might be thinking.

"I would say John Quincy Adams is right near the top of my list, not for when he was president so much as when he was in Congress and worked for probably 20 years to try to get rid of slavery with a non-violent solution," says Cross, a Boise resident.

Most places used to be closed on Presidents Day, but in the 1980s retailers started using the day as an excuse to move some merchandise.

"I think part of the meaning is lost a little bit. We should be prideful of the presidents and the kind of government that we have, but it quickly becomes a three-day holiday and too much shopping and sales and stuff like that," says Kristen Dallmann, a Meridian resident.
