BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Senate has killed an anti-marijuana resolution asking the federal government to enforce national drug laws, but passed a second one declaring opposition against marijuana use in any form.
Senators on Monday voted 21-13 to defeat the law enforcement resolution amid concerns it contradicts previous measures to ensure Idaho's sovereignty.
Boise Republican Sen. Chuck Winder argued that both measures were intended to show Idaho doesn't plan to go the path of some surrounding states like Washington, where voters last fall legalized pot.
Nampa Republican Sen. Curt McKenzie said the enforcement proposal contradicts the idea of states' rights — a principle his party used to oppose federal health care and endangered species laws. McKenzie doubted how the resolutions would make Idaho safer.
The Senate endorsed the anti-marijuana measure 29-5.

We need to have these conversations with our friends and families. I don't consume cannabis for fear of being thrown in a cage. However, I had this conversation in one of my classes and was able to sway the minds of anti-cannabis folks with strait facts and logic. The Conservatives claim a political stance of less government and liberty, until its profitable not to. We have a republic, and our representatives are not representing the people. In a recent study something like 70% of Idahoans support decriminalization of cannabis. so are 7/10 people being misrepresented by the likes of backwoods 1940's logic Chuck Winder? The reps love to use the debunked gateway theory, and the fear mongering regarding access to children.Â
If they are so concerned with substance access to children they need to reach out to parents, not jail responsible consumers. Same as the argument regarding firearms, no reason to punish the masses for the actions of few.
Yeah, we wouldn't want to give credit to scientific fact, medical reality and the needs of those who suffer and are left with legal medications like opiods. Highly addictive (bonus to big pharma) and worse than cannabis for sure. We sell tobacco and alcohol which are considerably more harmfull t the human body and are actually very addictive. Cannabis is not physically addictive and af all of the many thousands of drug related deaths in the US each year (alchohol and tobacco included) you can not list one from cannabis.......Â
Idaho is so far behind in science, education and acceptance reality!!!

I agree with you 100%! Â I think our State Legislators need to take a look at the things that really are posing problems in our communities. Â Why not make the prescriptions such as Oxycontin, Methadone and other opiates illegal? Â They need to realize that the problems are the pharmaceuticals! Teens that are into "getting high" just aren't into the likes of Marijuana and have moved on to swallowing, snorting, smoking and even injecting methamphetamine and prescription pills. Â These things, along with alcohol are what is threatening our communities and our children! Â Why not consider legalizing something that has proven to be virtually harmless in comparison (with more proven benefits), and outlawing the substances that are poisoning and killing our families???
