Sheriff: Oregon man who reported assault later found shooting at suspect

EUGENE, Ore. - Deputies didn't have any luck finding the man who Michael John Young said assault him last week - until Young found Steve Wayne Burke himself and shot at the man, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

Both Young, 59, and Burke, 61, are now in jail.

The case started July 9, when Young reported to deputies that he had been assaulted by Burke.

The sheriff's office was unsuccessful in locating Burke and issued an Attempt to Locate for him.

On July 13, they found both Burke and Young at a home on Svarverud Road south of Eugene while responding to a report of shots fired just after 9 a.m.

According to deputies, Young - armed with a gun and zip ties - attempted to make contact with Burke at the home.

When Burke refused to go with Young, Young fired multiple shots near Burke, the sheriff's office said. None of the bullets made contact with Burke.

Deputies took Young into custody on charges of Assault 1, Reckless Endangering, Menacing, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Pointing a Firearm at Another, and Criminal Trespass while in Possession of a Firearm.

Deputies took Burke into custody and lodged at the Lane County Jail on Assault 4, Strangulation, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.
