Boise man with 14 DUIs sentenced to life in prison

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - A Boise man convicted of his 14th DUI has been sentenced to life in prison.
Terry Ash, 55, was scheduled to be sentenced in Ada County Court back in August, however, a judge ordered him to undergo a mental evaluation.
Ash has been convicted of more than a dozen driving under the influence charges in the last 32 years. The most recent charge stems from a 2011 crash on Labor Day weekend near Swan Falls Road. Prosecutors asked for a life sentence with a minimum sentence of 20 years in jail. Eight of his convictions were felonies.
But the Ada County Prosecutor's Office says Ash will have to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before he's eligible for parole.
Judge Patrick Owen told Ash he was a "menace to society" and the public had to be protected.
Ash's defense attorney have said that Ash has a history of psychological problems.
So he has psychological problems. Today, who doesn't! He's dangerous, lock him up.Â
u know whats funny? Â i bet hes such a drunk it hardly even impares him anymore haha. Â either way 14th? Â lock him away before he kills one of us, smarter drinkers :)
Mental issues, why wasn't this addressed after his first DUI? or even 2nd or 3rd but 14th....gimme a break.
The miracle is, he failed to kill or maim anyone. DUI's should be treated as attempted murder, with a mandatory prison term for the first offense. There is NO EXCUSE. He should have gotten life on the third conviction.
he does have a mental problem. it's called being a moron. the 1st dui should b treated as attempted murder as it is in some states. that would send a strong message & b a good deterrent. there is no excuse for this & no excuse for our legislature not passing stricter laws.Â
14 DUI's is too many, should have been sentence after the second one. A drunk breathalyzer to start the car should be installed after the first offense.Â
Mental problems? Um, why is this just coming to light? I think it's just him & his lawyer trying to save his bacon! I ain't buying it. He needs to be behind bars. He has shown he can't follow the law regarding drinking & driving. He is going to get someone killed & it won't be him! Why do we always put up with this crap? We've had MADD around for decades now, but still you have a$$e$ like this? When are the laws going to stricter & punishments tougher. I'm tired of hearing about poeple dying because someone moron just had to drink & drive!!! It needs to stop!!!
This guy needed help a LONG, LONG time ago. Thank God he didn't kill or maim innocent people. Jail the answer, I don't know. How about AA while locked up and some extensive psycological help. I don't understand why someone didn't intervene after the first DUI. NJ has some of the strictest DUI laws. One of the reasons I am happy to be here.Â
The judge called him a menace to society, sounds to me like a menace to sobriety.
He should have been in jail years ago. He could have killed somebody!
Man, why did they let him go so long. If it was me I would of been slamed the 1st time. Don't give him nothing to to drive or ride unless he breaths in a mechine. Hopefully he will get some programs while he is locked up. Maybe he needs to go into a mental ward if he has other problems.

@ROB-BOB Do you have to be an ass? Or, you just being a bully?
Â
This man should have been locked up for a good long time, a long time ago. Â Say around the third time he was busted for DUI.Â
@Kathy Shaw LOL...Kathy you must be part of the 1% b/c then you should pay for all the increases in jail population, he needs that drunk breathalyzer to start the car..
Hopefully this will serve as a benchmark case of how things should be handled! 14 is far too many, but I've seen more and they are still getting a slap on the wrist...
